OAKLAND ACRES CITY COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
7:00 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2012
Oakland Acres Maintenance Building
Call Meeting to Order: Mayor Lennie Smith called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
Roll Call: Barb Arthur, Roger Fisher, and Ted Schultz were present. Absent: Robin Elliott and Garrett Roche. Also present: Larry Crady, Bob and June Dewar, Chuck Griffith, Jim Heishman, Tom Simpson, and Christina Machin.
Inquiries from the Community: Larry Crady suggested that the park be tilled and reseeded in the fall. He drove through it with the golf cart and reported that it was very rough. Smith will check into renting a tiller to go on the tractor. Chuck Griffith discussed the appearance of the grass and weeds on the corner just west of the bus stop. The Council discussed obtaining bids for seeding both this area and the park. Griffith volunteered to put together the specifications for the Council to review.
Crady volunteered to contact Central Iowa Water Association to have access to water at the park to water any new seeding this fall and to be able to wash the tractor at the maintenance shed.
Griffith wanted everyone to realize how fortunate the city is regarding the recent acquisition of the golf course. The new owners have done a lot within the last two weeks to improve the looks of the golf course. Oakland Acres as well as surrounding communities are very excited to have them. Jim Heishman, owner thanked them for their support.
An incident involving a resident and current council member was tabled until both parties have had a chance to have their sides heard.

Mayor’s Opening Address and Report
Mayor Lennie Smith spoke with Partner Communications regarding internet service. The Council discussed having them come to the next regular meeting. Smith will contact them to have them do a presentation at July’s meeting.
Old Business
Road Update: The clerk received a letter from Oak Helm Partners regarding the portion of Fore Seasons Drive and Parkview Drive which were once owned by Oakland Acres Golf Club. It appears that the company Fisher has been dealing with did not pay the taxes and it sold at another tax sale in which Oak Helm Partners purchased it. Fisher will follow up with them in order to obtain the deed on these parcels.
Ordinances: Discussion tabled until July’s meeting. Schultz volunteered to research the ordinances that were once part of the code regarding grass height, planning and zoning, etc that have been since left out of the current code.
Budget Amendment and Hearing Schedule: The Council determined that a budget amendment was not needed for FY 2012.
New Business
Oakland Acres Golf Club Permit: The Council unanimously approved the liquor license for Oakland Acres Golf Course.
Neighborhood Watch: Smith received a report from a resident in which his son was stopped by a car late Tuesday afternoon. The driver asked him for his phone number. The boy did not give it to him and he proceeded home. The car turned around and followed him. He returned home safely. Smith asked residents to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
Snow Removal Contract: The clerk will put an ad in the Jasper County Advertiser and Penny Saver to accept snow removal bids ending August 13th.
Iowa League Conference: Smith strongly encouraged council members to attend the Iowa League of Cities Conference in Sioux City in September. At the next meeting, he would like to be approved to attend along with anyone else interested in attending.
Other New Business: Smith acknowledged the Grinnell golf team who went to state and placed 3rd as a team. Amanda Hintz from Oakland Acres placed 2nd. Congratulations to everyone on the team!!
